Since long time, Meghalaya is the home to three major indigenous tribes, namely Khasi, Jainita and Garo, living in the villages in mountains. These tribes are known to be the earliest settlers in Indian sub-continent. These tribes having matrilineal society wherein the descent is traced through the mother and  have been following their own tribal religion. However with the advent of Europeans including British, most of them adopted Christianity.

Don Bosco Museum showcase a glimpse of the rich and multi-cultural lifestyles of the indigenous peoples of North East India. It is acclaimed as Asia’s largest museum of indigenous cultures. Seventeen galleries located on seven floors display a marvellous collection of artifacts, sculptures and paintings.

Museum is open on all days of the week from 09:30 AM to 05:30 PM except on Sunday.

Elephant Falls, at the out-skirts of Shillong town en-route to Cherapunji, is a tourists' paradise with three layers of the falls accessible from different vantage points. Owing to the presence of an elephant-shaped rock on one side of the fall, The Britishers named this fall as Elephant falls. Elephant Waterfalls is a superb place for spending some time in the midst of nature while capturing the incredible moments for your keepsake.

Sacred groves are the ancient traditions of nature conservation. Sacred groves are patches of primeval forest that some rural communities protect as abodes of deities as they draw their livelihood from these forests.

Mawphlang Sacred grove is one the sacred forest at the out-skirts of Shillong, en-route to Cherapunji", covering an area of 192 acres. The local Khasi tribes have been preserving this forest for thousands of years, and believe it to be the abode of the local deity, called Labasa. This sacred forest is govern by one strict rule – ‘NOTHING is allowed to be taken out of this Sacred Grove. Not even a leaf, stone or a dead log’. The local tribal people sacrifice animals on the monoliths inside the forest to make their wishes come true.

It is an amazing visual spectacle to nature lovers inside the forest with the inter-connected network of trees and plants – some of which are said to be over 1,000-years-old.

The trekking route between Mawphlang ( towards Shillong side ) and Lad-mawphlang ( towrads Cherapunji side ) is known as David Scott Trail. One of the rare preserved beauties of Meghalaya, David Scott trek is an adventure-filled trek through history. It is a part of a 100-kilometre trade route between India and Bangladesh constructed during the British administration in India.

This 16 kms long, mid-level trek at an altitude of 4,892 ft, passes through quaint Khasi villages, ancient sacred groves, lush green meadows, sparse fields, rolling mountains, rushing streams, stone bridges, and natural pools.

Usually, it is advisable to start the trek from Mawphlang ( and the vehicle can reach directly to Lad-mawphlang ) if you are travelling from Shillong to Cherapunji. With a normal energy level, it takes around 5-6 hours to complete the trek viewing the most panoramic natural scenes.

In the East Khasi Hills "Cherrapunji", also known as "Sohra" is about 60 kms from Shillong, state capital of Meghalaya. This is one of the wettest place on the earth as receives heavy rainfall all round the year. This stunning hill town (4500 ft) high above misty valleys and foaming rivers, is famous for double-decker living root bridge. Small hill town is home to many limestone formation caves including Mawsami caves. The breathtaking panoramic views of the valley and waterfalls are wonderful experiences during the visit to Cherrapunji. There are several treks through the mountainous and misty forests and water springs for the adventurous travellers.

Mawsmai Cave is a beautiful limestone cave located at Cherrapunji (Sohra) located in the middle of the lush green forest. Though the total length of the cave is 250 meters, it is only 150 first 150 meters are open for visitors. These well-lit caves adorned with stalagmites and stalactites are formed in millions of years. There are shallow water pools and small bridges over water springs. One at times has to squeeze himself and crawl but the experience is always unforgettable.

Nohkalikai Falls is the most panoramic and the tallest plunge waterfall in India with a height of 340 metres. Noh ka likai Falls are fed by the rainwater collected on the summit of a comparatively small plateau and decrease in power during the dry season, from December to February. The pool at the base of falls dramatically changes colours from blue to green to aqua with time and season. The view point at a little distance offers mesmerizing and calming views of the entire fall from edge to the bottom.

The trek to the waterfall’s edge through lush grasslands, forested hills, huge boulders over a fossil covered river bed, and clear streams, takes over 2 hours and it rewards you with the unique views of Nohkalikai. One can also take a side excursion for about 3 hours to the bottom of the fall through the steep stairs. Best time to enjoy the beauty of the fall is during afternoon when the mist get cleared.

Seven Sisters Fall or Nohsngithiang falls or Mawsmai falls is a seven-segmented waterfall. The picturesque water falls from a height of 315 metres and has an average width of 70 metres making it one of the tallest waterfalls in India. The falls plunges over the top of limestone cliffs of the Khasi Hills only during the rainy season from April to September. However, between October to December, the fall still looks beautiful as the mist lifts up and the waterfalls get illuminated by the sun. The vibrant colors of the setting sun on the waterfalls makes it beautiful. One can often observe the formation of rainbow on the waters of the falls.

Mid-level “ Trek to untouched hamlet – Nongriat” and “Living Root Bridges” is an out-of-this-world experience and is guaranteed to be a highlight of your travel. Natives in one of the wettest places in the world, have been building 'living' bridges out of tree roots that can stand strong for centuries , some of them estimated to be 400-500 years old

Meghalaya's indigenous Khasi people made bridges, over small rivers and water springs, out of a tree commonly known as the Indian rubber plant. Rubber fig trees, a species in the fig genus, has produced roots that can be tied, twisted and shaped into bridge-like structures. The roots of the tree are twisted and tied with each other as they grow in a guided direction through the bamboos across the river of water spring. There are several examples of double living root bridges, the most famous being the "Double Decker" root bridge of Nongriat Village near Cherapunji in Meghalaya.

A scenic drive of about 45 minutes from Cherapunji will take you to a small village of Tyrna. Further a trek of around 3 kms climbing down stairs of around 3500 steep stone steps will take you to the small village of Nongriat. Through-out the trek, there are small village shops selling mineral water, coffee, Tea, Juices etc. Usually it takes around 2 hours to reach to Nongriat from Tyrna including a short mid-way stop after climbing down around 2000 steps another small living root bridge at Nongthymmai village. A short hike for about 20 minutes from Nongthymmai village will lead you to the unbelievable hardship of Khasi people “The Double Decker Living Root Bridge” made over a small river. There are also some stone steps leading to the river. The views combining Double Decker Living Root bridge, the river and the nature around will immediately take away all you tiredness as you will find yourself lost completely lost in the lap of the nature. For the adventure lovers Nongriat trek does not finish at this point, as you further do an easy hike of around 30 minutes, you will be mesmerized by the stunning views of Rainbow Falls. One can even swim in pool of the waters from rainbow falls. One comes back to Tyrna village by the same route. Return is comparably more tiring as you need to climb-up the the steep steps.

Small Tips : This trek is best suitable for people with average to good physical heath conditions. Do not forget to carry your umbrella, a waterproof jacket, a support stick ( this can be hired from Tyrna village for as low as INR 25 ), a picnic lunch box from your hotel in Cherapunji ( unless you are comfortable to enjoy the local delicacies or spicy noodles and fruits ).
