Description

warika’s Hotel was registered in 1977, with the idea of reviving the architectural splendour of the valley. All the terracotta work was made in the valley, using local clay and skills. The couple also incorporated elements of Nepal’s diverse cultural heritage, including those from beyond the valley, when designing the rooms. The furniture was crafted by families of traditional carpenters, and the linen, textiles and embroideries were hand woven and used Nepali patterns. In all purposes, Dwarika Das Shrestha took some of the finest elements of Nepali crafts, and presented them in a way that had not been done before. In explaining his vision, he once stated: “My project is to recreate a 15th-17th century environment where tourist and Nepali alike would have a sensation of the original. The hotel as a commercial enterprise is merely a vehicle to finance and carry my dream forward.”

Dwarika’s Today The hotel is still managed by the Shrestha family – Ambica, Sangita and Dwarika Das’ grandson, Rene Vijay Shrestha Einhaus – and now makes up one of the largest private woodwork collections in the world. However, the family no longer buys old wood works unless they are significantly damaged and require restoration at the heritage workshop in the hotel. Where possible, the hotel instead encourages people to incorporate the pieces into their homes and appreciate their cultural heritage. The influence of Dwarika Das Shrestha’s vision can be observed to clearly in the old cities of Patan and Bhaktapur, where public and private initiatives are gradually restoring the city to its past glory. The Dwarika’s Hotel retains Dwarika Das Shrestha’s guiding philosophy and remains a beacon on the importance of heritage conservation in Nepal.

The linen is organically produced and hand woven. The furniture is custom designed and handmade at our own workshop. Many of the rooms face the charming courtyard.

We offer a range of culinary experiences, and with three restaurants and a bar to choose from, there is something for everyone.

Food is central to the Dwarika’s lifestyle. We place a strong focus on food that is fresh, organic and local. Many of the ingredients we use at the restaurants are grown at our two organic farms.

KRISHNARPAN

To spend an evening at Krishnarpan, the Nepali speciality restaurant at Dwarika’s, is to take a culinary journey through the fascinating terrains and cuisines of Nepal. Serving the finest Nepali of Nepali flavours, Krishnarpan is a slow dining experience reminiscent of the ritual feasts enjoyed by the Kathmandu Valley’s Newari community.

Meals range from six to twenty two courses and are prepared using the freshest vegetables from the Dwarika’s own farms. The courses are offered on traditional brass and earthenware, and served by hostesses representing Nepal’s diverse ethnic communities.

MAKO'S

The Japanese restaurant at Dwarika’s takes its name from its host, Mako-san. A keen interest in Buddhism first brought her to Nepal over three decades ago and since then, her heart has remained firmly here.

An intimate Japanese fine dining experience, Mako’s offers traditional Japanese food served in a warm and stylish setting. The minimalistic and Zen-like décor is inspired by Mako-san’s spirituality. Combined with 14th century Nepali architecture, the restaurant offers a unique setting that highlights the similitude between two civilisations.

PANCHA KOSHA HIMALAYAN SPA

The Dwarika’s Spa is a sanctuary for healing and purification. It offers an experience modelled upon the ancient traditions of care and respect that have developed in the Himalayan region over several millennia. The name of the spa is derived from the wisdom of the Vedas that claims that our Atman or self is made up of five layers of being – the physical, the intellectual, emotional and the essence of the absolute. Combined, they offer an authentic experience of life. Thus, any treatment at the Pancha Kosha Spa is a journey into the self
